About Us

We are a charismatic, evangelical church that meets in central Cambridge. We are members of the Evangelical Alliance and part of Newfrontiers, a family of over 300 churches in 22 nations.

City Church has about 350 members and there will be visitors and guests at many of our meetings. These people represent a broad cross section of Cambridge society (e.g. families, singles, students, those originally from other nations, people who work in and around the city).

We are seeing people from increasingly diverse backgrounds and upbringings come and be a part of City Church, which excites us very much.

There are many aspects to the work of the church. We are quite flexible: meetings and ways of doing things change and develop dynamically with time, sometimes at quite a pace! Take a look at the other pages in this section to find out more about the church, and explore our site to find out more about what we do.

We welcome anyone to come along and see what we get up to.

Some definitions:

Membership - means more than just attending on a Sunday! A member is someone who has done our "Place to Belong" membership course - which enables people to grasp our vision, values and purpose - and who expresses their desire to be part of the City Church family by joining a cell group and serving in an area of church life.

Evangelical - we believe that the Bible is entirely God's Word and as such, that it has the final authority in all matters of life and faith. Furthermore, we believe that the Bible states the 'good news' that Jesus' death and resurrection can put imperfect human beings right with a totally perfect and awesome God.

Charismatic - "One with the capacity to inspire followers or disciples with devotion and enthusiasm, one with a divine gift." (Little Oxford Dictionary)
It is neither the meeting style nor the personality of the leadership that make a church charismatic. The Holy Spirit - who is God himself - fills Christians with God's presence and power. The result is people who are passionately devoted to God and enabled by Him to live life as He directs. A key aspect of this dynamic is that the Holy Spirit gives special gifts that empower us to serve him (see 1 Corinthians 12-14). We seek to make space for the Holy Spirit to lead and direct us as a church.

In John 4:23-24, Jesus said that "true worshippers must worship the Father in Spirit and in Truth". As charismatic evangelicals we are totally committed to both God's Spirit and His Word shaping who we are and what we do.
